Place to eat and drink in Newport

Hia - as a newbie to the area, I hope you can help me with some local information...

I've promised to arrange a night out with my new colleagues, as a chance to get to know everyone properly. We're looking at a Friday night in the next couple of weeks, and we want to stay in Newport.

So where's a good place for 8-12 people to meet up, have some dinner and drinks but still be able to hear eachother!?

(So far, all my nights out in Newport have involved standing in a noisy crowd, trying to unstick my feet from the floor and clinging to a bottle of something pink.)

All suggestions welcome :D

Does it have to be in Newport centre? Is cost an issue? The Priory in Caerleon is absolutely gorgeous and the food is wonderful but its a bit more pricy than staying in town. Definately worth it if you are looking for somewhere with more character. http://www.caerleon.net/inns/priory/index.htm
The Nags Head in Usk is very good too, cheaper and more 'cosy-pub' than anywhere in town but may not be able to accomodate so many.
Caerleon is nicer on a Friday as town tends to attract the 16 year old binge drinkers

I haven't lived there for nearly 12 years so I am a bit behind with what is new but those above are places I have visited recently

Have heard great things about this place too but haven't been there myself http://www.thechandleryrestaurant.com/

    Thanks Floyd! :T

No, cost isn't a major issue - but it's always good to be MSE :p I've seen the Chandlery on my way home from work - looks very nice but is it me or is that really pricey? :o

City Centre is only preferable because those party-hard among us can go out for late drinks afterwards!

Hmmm... this place looks nice: http://www.pordosol.co.uk/index.htm but they don't seem to have a working menu online!

Has anyone been there? How expensive is it? Do you think I'll get something vegan? (I haven't got a clue about Portuguese!!!)

I would give them a call, most places will cater particularly if you will be in a big party. Thats if they know what vegan means, I am constantly amazed how many places don't have a clue!

I am reliably informed by some of my Vegan friends who still live in the 'Port that this site is good http://www.eatoutveganwales.org/Newport.htm and the Juboraj is amazing http://www.juborajgroup.com/

Wow, what a fabulous website!!! Thank you so much - the Indian looks great, as long as I can get the colleagues to agree :-)

Have bookmarked www.eatoutveganwales.org - top drawer.

  • Yes, Junction 28 is not cheap but the food is superb. It's not quite in the centre of Newport though, nearer Bassaleg.

China China is great, cheap and cheerful, the food is very good, I always think it's a bit like a canteen!
