iPod repair rip off?

I sent my Apple iPod classic to a repair company to fix broken charging port, which I knew I had caused to break.The repairer contacted me to inform repair not successful as water damage to logic board which could be replaced at extra cost.Although I bought iPod second hand about 5 years ago it was always kept in case and certainly never suffered water damage in my care, and was in almost pristine condition.Therefore, asked for iPod to be returned without further work.Returned iPod showed scratching that was not there when I sent it and closer inspection revealed the returned iPod has a different serial number to the one I sent for repair.contacted I contacted Apple and they confirmed the serial number of my iPod registered to my account.They also checked serial number of returned iPod which was not recognised and in their opinion not a genuine ipod. Can anyone advise on my rights.Should I report to police as theft?

I would insist that they return the correct iPod with the correct serial number.

It certainly sounds like a scam. What's the name of the company?

But yes, give them a chance to return it before escalating further.
