Hi,
Bought a new car and am due to collect in 2 weeks.
The dealer is saying I have to apply to put my registration that’s on my car on retention and put old plates on, then send him log book when arrives in post. My insurance charges me 30 quid to change plate and it’s already going to cost me 80 to do the retention.
Anyway I can avoid this, as I can’t find my old plates and don’t want pay to get new ones for my car that I’m getting rid of when I part ex it in 2 weeks!
Any advice on a way to transfer my plate? Or is this the only way.
Thanks

When I read new I read as Brand New, my last 2 cars I bought I sent the dealer the retention certificate and collected the car with the chosen reg, if it's a pre owned new car then the dealers are reluctant to do the extra work and leave it for the owner to sort out.0

I believe OP is talking about his old car which he has traded in rather than the new motor
The only other thing you could do is transfer the plate direct onto the new car rather than retaining it but that won't solve the issue of the old car. You're looking at £20+ for new plates to be made up with the old reg.
Maybe speak to your insurance about the overlap period though and see what they suggest. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
These are all part of the cost of having personal plates. One of the reasons my personal plates are hanging up in the garage and not on my car - I just got fed up of the hassle and cost every time I changed car.Sophie6876 wrote: »Hi,

I would tell the dealer that you intend to do the following when you go to pick up the new car. If its brand new you are paying for your new plates anyway so tell the garage to use the money to make the plates for your old cars original registration.
At the dealers take the plate of your car online and pay £80.00 When you do this you will be given a reference number. You can use this reference number to assign the plate to the new car online.
The last 3 cars we have purchased new we have used the dealers drive away insurance that lasted 3 days. KIA lasted 7 days.
All you then do is change you insurance details to that of your new car with your own plate.
You would need to take or send the old cars V5 to the dealer when you got it.
It does annoy me that we have to pay £80.00 each time we move a plate when we paid hundreds or thousands for a private plate when it can be done automatically online.3.795 kWp Solar PV System. Capital of the Wolds0 -
It is a Brand new car
Mercedes offer 7 days free insurance so I’ll just do that.
Thanks for your advice0
