Twitter competitions - How do they let you know if you have won?

I am not really a twitter user, I only use my account for competitions. I was just wondering, how do they let you know i you've won? Do they send you a direct message?

They will either tag you (which should then appear in your notifications) send you a direct message or expect you to see it in your news feed.

Ancillary question, if your feed receives 100 messages per minute as mine seems to do since it is only for competitions and I enter lots, how can you search to find out if you get a winning tweet?

Click on notifications and then you can select to just see mentions
