Afternoon All....

As above really...

For my kids Primary school every year we do discos broken down into age groups (Reception-Year 5) and serve hot dogs however for next year we want to try something else food wise (still keeping the disco) so was wondering if you clever lots have any other food ideas???

Pizza is a no as we "save" that for the leavers disco (Year 6).

We thought make like a tuck-shop kind of thing (crisps, popcorn, sweet).

Thanks in advance for any ideas and hope you all have a fab weekend!!

Hot dogs are conventionally seen as fairly fun and are finger food which are savoury not sweet. Using that as the desired model a few thoughts are corn on the cob, sausage rolls.

Ideas that feel less good include other barbeque type foods (maybe not kebab skewers) scotch eggs, spring rolls, toasted cheese.

The reason that sausages in rolls are so good is because they are so easy to do in large quantities and keep warm. Its also a very cost effective option.

you could think about doing things in wraps, chicken with some salad. or maybe use pitta bread with some fillings

small plates or bowls of nachos

    Chicken nuggets or chicken strips

    bacon rolls

Fish finger sandwiches or possibly in rolls.

    spring rolls
    chunky cheese straws

    pasties or small pies

I like the idea of popcorn,my only reservation being it will get thrown around and you could end up clearing up more than is eaten.I'd perhaps not go with the sweets option of the tuck shop,if its an evening disco then maybe something boarding on a meal might be better.

If you wanted something sweet, how about pancakes, rolled with various fillings, and not too difficult to eat as a finger food.

Small bowls of fruit salad, dependant on season, strawberry, blueberry, grapes, banana, apple, melon

Ideally you need something that is easily portable doesnt make too much mess and doesn't require cutlery.

Why can't you have the pizza as well as hot dogs?
From your post it looks as if year 6 get a separate do anyway so you won't be giving them the same thing twice.

I would go with the tuck shop idea - it's easy and less messy. Lidl do cheap packs of popcorn bags if hiring a machine isn't feasible/ cost effective. Buy paper bags and put the sweets in them in advance or the kids spend an age dithering over their choice, and with younger ones sticking their fingers into every box. Ice lollies are good if you have adequate freezer space and a pile of cooler boxes - those and bucket loads of squash keep them hydrated for all the running around and dancing. It's worth asking if your local supermarket is prepared to help the PTA - our Sainsburys donated dozens of bottles of squash for discos etc and half the fruit we gave to children at Sports Day.

I've still got a car full of stuff to sort out after year 6 Leavers disco and pizza session on Friday. I'm hoping (praying) that our PTA gets more offers of help from the new Foundation parents come September as I end up run ragged trying to organise stuff. In a school with 420 pupils we have the grand total of 5 Mums involved with the PTA, plus a couple of husbands who help when they can. It's pathetic really when I know that half the parents don't work.

Burgers and Jacket Potatoes with cheese are 2 alternatives sold at my kids former Junior school at their summer fayres. Depends on what cooking facilities you have though.

Hah! We could be from the same school! There's me and the school admin lady and occasionally a couple of other mums. Over 400 at our primary too.

I have just realised the obvious question - why do you want to change? Do the kids not like the hot dogs or are the adults bored of serving them, or some other reason?

I'd guess that it's a tradition to keep pizza for Year 6 so having it every year wouldn't make Year 6 leavers special.

In my experience, children absolutely love 'shopping' so the tuck shop idea was extremely popular. I'd say a huge percentage of the children enjoyed spending in the tuck shop more than any dancing at the disco.
