Double Glazing Company Won't Accept Credit Cards

Options
I'm having double glazing fitted next week. However, I've just had a text from the company to say please pay the fitter next week with cash, cheque or debit card.

However, I was planning on only paying by credit card to cover myself under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 in case anything went wrong. I've just re-read the contract I signed and nothing states payment method.

They're a reputable company in my area, but was wondering if anyone thought this sounded fishy? Also, can a cheque offer a similar insurance?

Thanks,
Vikkie

A company can refuse any payment method they wish.

Have you called them to ask if they will accept at least a partial payment on a credit card? That would give you the protection you're looking for - even if the payment is just £10.

Not fishy at all, no company is obliged to accept credit card payments, and following the banning of charges for CC payment earlier this year some companies will be reviewing their payment methods. Of the methods listed you should certainly pay by debit card as that gives you the possibility of a Chargeback if there are any problems.

yeah, a lot of companies do that. They use contractors to fit the product. You have to pay the contractor for the fitting and pay the company for the product?

Or are they asking you to pay for the whole lot to the fitter?

Paying by debit card also provides you some protection.

As lilelvis says, even a partial payment will cover you (it can literally be a penny). It's possible the trader is getting hit with CC charges and therefore doesn't want to take them for large amounts (but they may be willing for a £1)

It could just as easily be that they are using "Debit" card as a generic term for all cards.

If they will not accept a credit card and you want the protection that comes from paying by that method, look for another supplier.
There is no shortage of alternatives, dissatisfied customers nor wound-up companies.

As the glazing is being fitted next week, it's almost certain that due to the time it takes to measure up and make the units, the contract was signed a while ago so finding another supplier may mot be a possibility.
Unless the company concerned specifically stated that they would accept credit card payments for the fitting then they are under no obligation to accept them.

What is your concern? Faulty workmanship in fitting or faulty goods?

Presumably you paid a deposit? What form of payment was taken then? If it was on CC you're already covered, if not, did you ask about CC at the time?
