My husband really wants artificial grass when we move, the whole garden is currently slabbed over.
I'd rather real grass or none at all!
In this heat we've had has anyones artificial grass melted?

What do the local blackbirds, thrushes, starlings and so forth think about it?

Later in the year I'll be doing my football training on an artificial pitch, for many practical reasons. Can I suggest though, that people with gardens who want the artificiality of a plastic lawn with no thought to the environment. move to a flat in the city. Why have a garden at all?

I like living where I live, I dont want to move to the city and I hare gardening, but I thinks its my choice to have what I want in my garden.

I like to be able to sit outside sometimes, Have a BBQ every now and then, be able to open all my doors and windows without worrying who might come in.

PS I havent got artificial grass...and my real grass is more moss and weeds than grass

It has its uses once saw one in a garden so steep you almost needed to abseil down it and it was surrounded by tall shrubs and buildings so was almost permanently shaded and dim. Real grass just never did well. It still needed vacuuming/blowing to keep it tidy though so its certainly not maintenance free if thats what people are thinking of.

A good alternative, if you want some real growing plants to look at but want to avoid mow8ng is to plant Mind your own Business ". (Don't know the Latin name I fortunately. It's a very low growing green plant that provides a permanently green ground cover all year round without the apparent need for any mowing.

Is anybody on here who has planted it as an alternative to artificial grass able to comment on any drawbacks? . I,ve seen it planted in one shady cottage environment with great success but it may not thrive so well in a very sunny situation.

I have artificial grass in my back garden and real in the front.
The plastic grass is more environmentally friendly as i dont need to use any petrol to mow it or water it when it gets dry.
Its great to look at and walk on all year round regardless of the weather.

However, artificial grass is a plastic synthesised from gas and/or oil. Unlike grass, it won't bio-degrade.

Also no one is forced to use a power mower on an average sized lawn, or needs to water it. Our lawns have gone all summer on our well-drained plot without watering. They don't look magnificent, but neither did those at RHS Rosemoor when I was there last week.
  • My colleague has fake grass and hasn't heard the last of it since i popped round for a beer one Sunday afternoon and his missus was outside hoovering it..... yes, hoovering it :)
