Will changing access point result in change of address?

Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice that I can't readily find online and can't get a hold of the relevant person in my local council that would be able to assist.

We have a plot of land with an old victorian villa in it currently in use as office suites. The address is 21 East Fake Street and vehicle access is currently taken from East Fake Street.

We are considering blocking up this entrance and reinstating a historic entrance on West Fake Street. If we were to do this, would we then have to change the address of the property to 21 West Fake Street (or another number if that is already taken) or would we be able to keep the address as 21 East Fake Street even though there is no longer an entrance on that street?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks.

Is there a dropped kerb where the new entrance would be? If not that could be a problem if the local authority won't allow the installation to provide access.

I wouldn't think that you would have to change the address. There are a lot of houses on street corners, for instance, where the door is in a different street.

It may create problems for deliveries or visitors.
  • Thanks Martin,

There is a dropped kerb and we have received planning permission to reinstate the entrance so no issues on that front (I should have mentioned that in my initial post).

Glad to hear that you don't think the address will need to change.

The property's address will remain 21 East Fake Street, but it may become undeliverable by Royal Mail if the access is closed.

If the access on West Fake Street is on the same postman's walk they may agree to just take the post around the corner, but if it's on a different walk, or significantly out of order on the same walk, you'll need to get a new delivery point allocated by Royal Mail.

Even if the street address remains 21 East Fake Street, it may get a different postcode for mail delivery, and that could start upsetting a lot of things (and if you have multi-tenanted office suites, a lot of people in different businesses).

You need to speak to Royal Mail about your delivery arrangements. You might need to retain pedestrian access for the postman, or at least a letterbox, at the old location.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Thanks for the very helpful post Owain.

Is it just the vehicle access you are closing? Will a pedestrian entrance still exist from the original street for the postman?

If you are closing the pedestrian entrance, put a posting box in the wall or fence labelled "post for 21 East Fake Street" and another sign saying "vehicle access for deliveries from West Fake Street"
  • Great idea Dave, thanks.

A corner plot house in my town has done this, moved the entrance from the front on A Street to the side on a right angle in B Street. The only issue it seems to have cause is that it was say number 50 A street but it is also right next to 49 B street so it looks like it is part of B Street when the official addresss is still A Street. I don't think they have an issue with mail but they have a lot of problems with people finding their house as it looks like it doesn't exist. It wouldn't be so bad if B street ended on a different number but the street flow makes it worse.
