Being charged excess for unauthorised repair

Options
Looking for a bit of advice (not sure if this is the correct section or not)

Had my boiler serviced this morning by Corgi as part of my service contract. As the guy was checking it out he noticed there was a bit of a leak from the filling loop (I already knew this, as it had been like that for the last 5 months). He said I have a spare bit in the van I'll just pop it on.

Fast forward 2 hours later, I've just had a call from Corgi saying that as my service plan doesn't cover repairs that I owe them the excess of £50. At no time did the engineer tell me that there would be a charge or inform me that I needed to authorised him 'fixing' anything. He just said 'I fixed that bit of a leak, thought I might as well of while I was here'.

The call from Corgi was a bit weird. When they rang they said that my cover doesn't cover repairs so I would need to pay the £50 excess. I told them I wasn't happy about that as I wasn't told about the 'repair' and that I could purchase my own filling loop for £8. He then said 'so you are not willing to pay the excess' I said no, and he said 'ok, thank you, and hung up.

Does this mean I'm going to get a bill through the post for an extortion amount? Will they just take the money directly from my bank account along with my DD? Will they come back for their loop?

This is the first time I've used Corgi (my previous cover provider always made me authorise and sign for any repair), but now I'm left worried about whats going to happen.

I don't think Corgi use extortion. It's hard to get the staff for that sort of work these days.

I would expect a letter shortly to clarify whether any additional payment is required. Take it from there.

Since you knew the repair would only cost you £8 to DIY, but you hadn't got round to it in 5m, he probably did you a favour, for which they're asking you to pay £42. That's about half an hour's labour for a 10 minute job.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

nothing to make my mind up about... the filling loop leaks when you fill the boiler up (which I do a couple of times a year), would replace it next time I go to plumb center - not urgent and not a £50 job!

    but thanks for your advice!

I was referring to the fact that you start by telling us that the service engineer told you upfront that he could quickly fix your filling loop leak and then tell us that you weren't told about the repair until afterwards. Which is it?

Look into the Consumer Contract (Information, Cancellation & Additional Charges) Regulations.

They're required to give certain information to you before you're bound by the contract. Part of that information is the total price of goods/services or, if that cannot be calculated in advance, then how the price will be calculated.

I wonder if the engineer thought you have a service & repair contract
So it flagged up when he put the job sheet in. Hence the strange call/way of dealing with it
