Key requirements are that it is cordless and lightweight.

I used a battery powered trimmer a few weeks ago, I found it very tame compared to my petrol trimmer.

From my experience cordless, lightweight and powerful are incompatible. The lightest Which Best Buy is the Black & Decker GTC36552PC at 3.2 kg.

I got this one last Xmas from Argos for £50 minus £5 off spend. They dont sell it now. But I was astonished how good it was compared with me corded one this went through thick stems of some sort of creeping like leylandii plant my neighbour grows as he is too bone idle to trim and maintain his garden and I cut it because it over grows on to pavement and it can hurt people

Its very light you can handle it with a couple of fingers, a frail old lady could just about pick it up

I bought my wife a Makita trimmer and she loves it. It's lightweight and well balanced.

The only downside is that it can work out expensive if you don't already have the batteries and charger.

In recommending its also useful to know what type of hedge (Privet, Leylandii, laurel etc) and the height and how much you have to cut. This drives the ideal blade gap and blade length.

My go-to cutter is always my long blade, torquey, mains electric model, as I can cut almost all without steps and very quickly.

Picking it up is another matter entirely. I find the best method is to find someone else to do it.
