When I was a penniless student in Paris (sounds more glamorous than it was, I assure you), our standard thrifty meal was to put into an oven dish some creme fraiche (small tub) mixed with tomato puree (small tin, which you can't buy in England - about 2 tblsps - or ketchup would probably do) with a clove of garlic crushed into it and any kind of ham or other cheapo tinned meat (except corned beef, I would imagine) cubed into it. Cook some pasta (Tesco's value penne works well for this), mix it into the sauce, top with grated Emmenthal or Cheddar and bung in the oven until heated through and cheese browned.

Incidentally, for a good-enough-for-non-family-members dish, roll up slices of "real" ham in your oven dish, top with this same sauce and cheese and bung in the oven as before. Yum!

Fried rice is my favourite way to use up things! Chopped up tinned ham, some peas, onion and maybe some prawns added to some boiled rice in a pan with some sunflower oil in the bottom, crushed garlic and maybe some curry powder.

This is exactly the type of ham my Mum used to use for this quick, easy, cheap risotto when I was growing up. I have just laminated the recipe for her, as the 70s magazine page was falling to pieces! I make it now, but without the meat, but I remember cubes tinned ham being lovely in it:

    FAMILY RISOTTO

    1 tablespoon oil
    1 small onion, chopped
    1 tomato, chopped
    2oz mushrooms, chopped
    8oz long grain rice
    1 pint water or stock
    6oz diced cooked ham, chicken,
sausages, pork or a mixture of all four
    salt and pepper
1 tablespoon chopped parsley to garnish

Heat the oil and fry the onion, tomato and
mushrooms for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the
    remaining ingredients except the parsley.
Bring to the boil, cover, simmer gently,
stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes,
or until the rice has absorbed all the
liquid. Turn into a serving dish and
    sprinkle with chopped parsley

If I'm too late to help you, hopefully the next person to find surprise tins of ham at home will be able to use this one!!

A few years later, being on lockdown, just done a tin inventory, yes they are all out of date, but I will make a decision when I opened not on the date and found, large oval tin of ham, small ham, chopped ham & pork, bacon grill, spam, and 3 corned beef!!  I got some chicken breasts out of the freezer last night, by the way have you tried cooking them dry in the slow cooker, as long as not done too long, they are really moist and do not have a hard top, ideal fir cutting into cubes to mix with the ham for pies, rice, etc., as above, so these are now going to be used up!

    corned beef.
makes a good  spaghetti bolognese  with tomatoes or usual sauce, mash it into the sauce
I like corned beef with salad, in wraps, it also freezes well out of the tin. Corned beef hash can be made with just root veg or even instant mash.

The ham could be used in a leek and ham pie. Fry the leek gently until soft, add the ham and a thickish white sauce, top with shortcrust pastry.
well his thread may be a blast from the past but Moggins has provided the inspiration for tomorrow night's supper!

Ah yes, egg fried rice with tinned ham - that takes me back to my student days! Best tip I ever had was to tip the cooked rice onto a clean tea-towel 10 minutes before adding it to the pan (and then decanting it into a bowl first, unless a hob redecorated with bits of rice is a fashion style you want!)

Also, something called 'wok beans' - onion, garlic, tin tomatoes, chopped up tinned ham, tin beans, rinsed and whatever other veg and herbs or spices I had  - I remember grated carrot was a regular - served over (usually) rice or pasta.

Reminds me, I found a pack of 2 bacon rashers in the freezer - may be time for this dish to make a reappearance!

Spam or tinned ham - slice it, fry it and serve with eggs.

Corned beef - boil potato and an onion, mash the corned beef into it, add to oven dish and top with with some gravy, bake until golden on the top.

Beef in gravy or other meat in sauce - curry, stew or pie.
