Casement Window Hinge Replacement; Positioning?

Hi,
I am looking to replace a number of UPVC window hinges as I am getting draughts at the hinge side (side hung windows).
When replacing the hinge, where do I position the sash relative to the pointed end of the hinge that closes into the "cup"? In theory I could position it anywhere along the hinge so that it was too far along the hinge then the handle end of the window would foul against the fixed frame or vice versa if positioned too far towards the pivot point of the hinge.
As I understand I need to position the hinge on the fixed frame so that the "cup" end of the hinge is up tight against the window frame.

I had to replace my window hinge... ideally like for like, but it turned out to be a best fit.
I believe that you cant replace it with just any hinge, as there is a weight factor involved, and hinge thickness.
also the hinge has to be put at the correct distance, and the holes and the hinge were already pre-drilled - there seems to be a standard.
The amount (angle) the window opens is also another feature you can chose.
Unless you had burglars, or kids swinging on them, would suggest it is a windows issue rather than a hinge one.
I bought my hinges from dgsupplyline.co.uk and they were very knowlegeable and helpful.0 -
Hi,
Yes I am aware of the stack height, selecting the longest hinge for the window sash as possible and the thickness of the hinge to be accepted into the euro profile.
If the pre-drilled holes are in the same place for all hinges then all well and good (or even if the first hole is relative to the hinge/pivot point)
Hinges are around 2003 date from previous owners; small amounts of stone/mortar etc in corners makes me assume that the debris has got caught in the channel and has caused the hinge to become worn. Additionally with the window open, I can "lift" the sash up and down at the open end a bit and feel play in the hinge too.Regards, Robin.2011 MFW # 34

I made a drawing of the hinge design, strut lengths, and the distances between holes and presented it to them.
My original hinge had three side slider settings which limited the amount that the windows can open, making it inaccessible to burglars, but they had screwdrivers and tried to use it to get in anyway, breaking the hinge.
The company offered to get special hinged made for me, but time (many weeks) and cost vs £16 ones that were immediately available swung my choice.0
