Can't get satisfaction from car seller.

Options
I bought a 11 year old car from a small garage owner on June 26th. When I was looking at the car, I was told that it had 10 months MOT on it, but when it was delivered, and I received the papers, I saw it only had a month or so left. I pointed this out and the seller said oops, he would do the MOT for half price ie £25 and he would do any work necessary to get it through at no cost to me so I agreed.

Since however, after 2 attempts to get it booked in, he is not responding. After no response to Facebook message I took the car to see him yesterday as there is a rattling noise underneath and he drove it and said that it sounds like the new exhaust is a bit loose and he would do the job when he does the MOT and would send me a date when it is booked in. I said that I wanted the test to be done before the 28 days guarantee is up.

No word from him though so what is my next step please?

So you bought the car then?

What do you have to prove what the dealer offered you?

What car is it and how much and how did you pay?

My point is, if he turns round and says you saw the car and paid for it as it is, what have you got to show otherwise?

It is a Toyota Aygo and I paid £1,200 and got a reciept saying +MOT at £25. I gave him cash.

Buyer beware. Always check the papers of a car before buying/agreeing to buy.

What guarantee did you get with the car or has the garage sold it on behalf of the owner?

If it was in the garages name you should have rejected the car when it was dropped to you and you saw the MOT was less than advertised.

So the guy is happy to do the MOT test for £25, no guarantee the car will pass and you will be left with repair costs.

28 days warranty. I have till 24th July

Guy said he would not charge for any repairs needed. The MOT length was not advertised - it was what the seller told me. He did seem a bit scatty.

Everything is 'said' 'said' and nothing ' It is in the contract'!

Unfortunately you will have to take this one with a pinch of salt. Put it down as experience.

28 days warranty, I will be surprised if it is worth anything.

Why don't you book it with another garage yourself for MOT at the going rate ( some garages charge £30 I think ). And then if it fails, take the car and the failure to him and get him to repair it under warranty. See what he says!

For future reference here is a site where you can check the MOT and see all past failures/advisories. On an 11 year old car its very important to carry out some basic checks:

The time to check the MOT and service history is before you agree to buy it. not when it's collected or delivered.

takman thank you so much. The news was bad - lots of failed MOT's. I have been done. Booked it in with my usual mech.

Yes I know what I should have done - I am not an idiot. However, since one of my children committed suicide a few months ago, my mind is not working very well and I should not have had ro make such a financial decision.
