Non student moving into Student Accomodation

Options
Afternoon all!

Ive been told by a few people I know (students) that non students are able to move into a student house as long as there is at least one student living there.

Now, my situation:

My girlfriend is living away at uni, and next year will be moving into a student house. Me and my girlfriend have spoken about me moving in with her (into a student house) and some other people for me to be closer to her.

I have been told by another friend that I will have to pay the council tax for everyone living in the house. Is this true? Also would anybody be able to inform me the sort of costs it would be JUST for the council tax alone?

Thankyou!

No - you won't have to pay the council tax for everyone. But, in effect, you will be liable to pay all the council tax yourself...which works out the same.

Students are exempt from council tax.

You (as non-student) are not. So you will have to pay council tax, and you can't get a discount, as you won't be living on your own, so will have to pay 100%

How much this is depends on where the house is, and what size it is. Check the local council website for the tax bands in the area.

I was under the impression that if one person liable for council tax lived in a student house they got the 25% discount. Call the council in question.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.

  • Hi :) ... i know alot of "non-students" who lived in student accomodation, but i think most of them was "unofficial" ... on the Tax situation i think you will be liable to pay 75% of the whole bill. The whole bill depends upon the area and dewelling, eg ... i live in the SW in a 2bed house, my monthly bill is £100 you will be liable to pay £75pm.

Hopfully someone with more knowledge will be along shortly :o

  • If you are the only non(full time) student you will be solely responsible for the council tax bill. BUT as the only liable adult, you will get a 25% discount on the full council tax bill for the property.

You can check the council tax band of a property here http://www.voa.gov.uk/cti/InitS.asp?lcn=0

The (full time) students cannot be held liable for the council tax unless they are subletting to you.

    What he said.
If they are all students - and you are not, so you'd pay the full council tax on the property. However, I would be surprised if you'd pay 100% - I bet you still get the sole-person-discount so pay only 75%, but as the other poster says - check the council website to find out how much it would be and if you would get the single person discount.

For this reason, to avoid complications, many student landlords might actually refuse you moving in as they "deal with all the bills" in a lot of instances and it complicates matters.

    Rubbish!

As the only working adult in the house you get a 25% discount!

That's what my council says :o

Yours may be nicer than mine!

.....however, thinking about it, the last person I spoke to at my council tax office was very very dim, and when I said a flat I was calling about was vacant but not unfurnished, she asked if I was sure I wanted to put that, as I'd get a bigger discount if I lied (not quite in those words) and then proceeded to give me the forwarding address of the previous occupier!

Can't you just live unofficially in the student house, and remain on the voters role at your parents house?

Those who say you pay Full council tax minus 25% are correct. I now have a Student staying with me and cannot charge him tax but I still retain my 25% single persons discount.
