Hybrid vs diesel vs petrol

Fair enough. We bought the Hyundai from a small garage and he advised against buying petrol at the time because they lose value! Needles to say we feel a bit caught out now.
What would be the next best thing after a hybrid? We're looking for a reasonably sized car. An estate possibly. The Dacia Logans have caught my eye, the 0.9L petrol engine looks like a decent option. I'm presuming something like that would be much cheaper to run than a heavy 1.7 diesel SUV?
This is the problem with following advice from sales guys who will talk about what is in trend at the time he is selling the car. You need to buy according to your needs. Getting something approaching 40mpg in mainly urban driving is actually not bad at all. My 2015 CX-5 barely does 40mpg on extra urban. It seems to prefer to do 40 - 50mph rather than 70 on the motorway.
I've driven the Auris hybrid estate as a hire car in Italy and while I found it excellent on fuel, it was gutless and boring to drive. My wife described the sound of the engine as equal in quality to a dying fly.0 -
Bear in mind that there are some very shouty people moaning about a very small number of engines with Ecoboost problems, and many more silently getting in with running their cars with absolutely no problems at all (I'm one of the latter, and I don't personally know any other Ecoboost owner who has any complaint about their engine).
Just wondering, is the Ecoboost technology the same as the Econetic tech? I've seen a nice, very reasonably priced Fiesta for sale locally, but it's a diesel with Econetic tech.0 -

Not the same at all, Ecoboost are turbocharged petrol engines whereas Econetic are (I believe) normally aspirated diesels.

I can't comment on whether it's any good as I have never owned a diesel fo any description, and doubt if I ever will.0 -
OH had a CT200 as a company car as when she picked it was a bargain on the tax, she changed it a year ago for a diesel suv. the hybrid was meant to do 70 odd mpg, we rarely bettered early 40s. the cvt was odd but very easy to drive. the new car should do 50mpg and were getting mid 40s so pretty impressive. would we have another hybrid - maybe, diesel probably not, petrol would be our preferred option now due to our limited mileage0
