Matrix, first off, your mum might need to apply for IS in her own name, to get the mortgage paid, although they might be sorting this out anyway?
secondly, your mum has to have a basis for claiming IS (or JSA which would also include mortage payments), but for the first 8 weeks (?) after your dad's death she is still classed as a carer. After that she either needs to sign unemplyed or be classed as unfit for work. Either option will mean she can get the mortgage paid.
It might be worth asking if the local jobcentre has a bereavement officer who your mum could see by appointment. Used to be done that way - a bit of extra training and knowledge to help in these circumstances - worth a call?
good luck, and come back here if you need further advice
Thanks for your advice.
My mum is going to get my dad's life insurance policy payout, which i think is around about 20k, as far as i'm aware i'm sure that IS and JSA are means tested so i doubt she is going to get very much due to getting this life insurance policy.
The money as far as i'm aware is not a great amount and obviously as she is not working and having to pay full mortgage, council tax etc its not going to last very long. Also the money is going to have to be used to live on as there will be no income apart from the Bereavement Allowance she gets for 1 year and the Beareavement Payment of 2k.
Going into the building society with her tomorrow to get a better deal (hopefully) as she and my dad have been paying there mortgage for the past 10 years or so on the banks base rate!!!!0 -
Hello again,
thanks for your thanks!!
just to clarify when I said she would be entitled to some payments from his pension I didn't just mean any private pensions, but his state pension aswell.
It took some sorting out, lost paperwork etc, but mums now getting a % of what would have been dads pension. she may aswell get all she's entitled to.
My dad had just turned 61 and also died of cancer. I miss him soooo much.

Aw Susie,
Sorry to hear about the loss of your dad... My dads funeral was yesterday and i found it really difficult. I was upset for most of the day, just trying to keep myself busy the now, I feel like i'm on auto pilot sometimes.
Where you from Susie?0 -
hi,
forgive me from punctuation & spelling mistakes, its past my bedtime!!
I'm from Blackburn, Lancs, you?.. My dad died on 5th dec. It's been an horrific year. he helped us through so much including a mischarriage, bankruptcy etc., but never judged and offered so much love and support (including financial!!). My dad was my best friend, i could really talk to him and know I get nothing but honest advice & support. his favourite saying to us was " I've never known anybody work so hard as you two, and end up with so little".
My thoughts are really with you, and don't feel I can lie and say things will get better, cos they don't, it just gets easier to cope with. and all the good memories are yours forever
take care.
