I'd highly recommend the safety/Double edged razor route. Invest in a decent razor and it will last a lifetime and the blades are literally a few poence each if you buy in bulk and can be recycled afterwards.

And the shaves are better anyway IMHO. I converted a few years ago and now look forward to shaving.

I don't think I've got the patience for the cut-throat razor and perhaps not the focus required early in the morning. It may be a retirement option though.

The safety razor, I think my dad used one of them when I was kid. It was a little stubby metal thing that looked like a mushroom. If I recall correctly when the bottom of the shaft was rotated the blade housing would open. Then the flat blade could be replaced, Wilkinson Sword rings a bell. That and the cutthroat were probably the only options them days. Will explore that avenue.

You do need to be more careful using a safety razor than you do with a cartridge as it is possible to nick yourself. Therefore if you do try that route its recommended to get a mild razor to begin with to familiarize with the technique. The Shaving Room is a forum where you can get good advice on everything.

Exactly what my husband bought. Just checked Amazon and they are selling sets (razor, brush, foam block and 100 razors for less than £20).

They take a bit to get use to, but they are a lot cheaper to use :)

Is the razor that your husband bought part of one of those sets on Amazon and if so can you provide me with a link, please?

    Thanks

I can certainly endorse that - having to be careful. I tried one last year, watched several YouTube videos on how to use but every time I managed to nick myself, ended up with bits of tissue stuck to my face!
I would love to be able to use one as the cost saving per year is appreciable. I did all the research before buying one and did go for the mild razor and was surprised at the very wide price range.
Don't know how my Dad's generation learnt how to use them - no YouTube then!

He has this one (currently £16.99): link
And Astra Superior platinum double edge razors (cannot find those on Amazon so no link).

The set I saw for £15.21 was this: link
A good price to try it out and you could always upgrade the razor later on if you wanted to

Nicking yourself is all part of the fun with a cut throat lol.

I probably sliced my face a dozen times before I got the hang of it but now that I have its the best thing I have ever done. Yes it takes probably 10-15 minutes to have a shave but concentrating on my face and only my face for 15 minutes is very refreshing - nothing on my mind except what I am doing at that moment.

I went out and spent £20 on soaps as well as before and after products and they have last me over a year now compared to £1 on just shaving foam every other week.

But for savings on the blades alone it pays for itself.

For 15 minutes you're living in "the now". To fully appreciate that and the benefits to life (if you are ready for it) I would recommend you read the potentially life-changing book called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It can also be streamed on youtube as an audiobook.

  • I just looked that up and its all in dollars.

Why are you asking people from the UK to buy from a dollar site?
  • I would suggest a better choice. My choice is DOVO Straight, because I have it and it's good razor =).
  • My husband swapped to a safety razor (butterfly type) a few years ago.

He shaves both his face and head (what little hair he has left). He needed to invest in a brush and bowl, but it has been so much cheaper and a better shave.

+1 for safety razors. The blades are much better value and a single blade reduces irritation. I set up a business to promote the benefits of traditional shaving; more and more people are discovering what a brilliant shave you can get with a safety razor, and the razor/blades are plastic free too!
