Apple MacBook Pro 13" 2017 Touchbar

Options
Hi everyone.

I purchased a 13" Macbook Pro with touchbar 2017 model from Curry's on 29th June and was assured by the sales rep that Apple had no plans to release a new model this year as it would've been announced at the Apple WWDC earlier that month... To then find out Apple have released a brand new 2018 model on friday. I felt sick to the stomach and feel like I've just wasted all that money on old tech.

I've read numerous reports online that customers who did the same but purchased from Apple within 30 days before the new model being released are being offered a full exchange to the newer model no questions asked. I've read Curry's return policy and know they can be extremely difficult, it says if you've even opened the product they won't take it back unless it's faulty.

Where do I stand? If I'd known they were releasing a brand new (and quite frankly a much faster and improved machine) only 2 weeks later, I would've waited. I feel conned considering it was such a big purchase. What should I do?

You can try, but Currys will likely have this covered ... the sales rep will assert that he/she said "to the best of my knowledge ..... yada yada". In fact a quick search suggests that Apple didn't reveal the 2018 version until 12th July - whether there were any previous rumours I've no idea - so it seems the sales rep may have been correct at the time. Ultimately it is for the consumer to do their research before purchasing.

In terms of your rights - if you purchased in-store then you have no change of mind rights other than those provided for in Currys T&Cs.

The release of the new macBooks did come as a compete surprise, even to seasoned Apple watchers. So it's not surprising a Curry's sales rep had no idea. The WWDC is a software only conference and rarely are new hardware details shared within it.

Well you should feel conned by Apple.
Currys had no way of knowing.

There's literally articles on top tech websites in the days leading up to the refresh saying you can expect a refresh in April 2019, and nothing is likely to land soon given there was no nod at WWDC. Many of the headlines referring to the new MacBooks use the word "surprise".

The Currys member of staff was as well informed as anyone in the industry at the time (and gave the same answer that a member of staff at the Apple Store would have given). Unfortunately there's just no way of knowing when there will be a new release - it sucks, but it's just one of those things.

No harm in asking but chances are very slim as you did not buy direct from Apple. Even then you might have had a tough time too.

As for the sales person he should have just said "I don't know" but I guess thats hard for a sales person as they like to waffle anyway :rotfl:

... but at least Apple are offering a swap for the new model for their customers in the same situation as me!

If Apple were so 'good' then they should allow everyone to take advantage of that offer regardless of retailer by offering those retailers the new versions to swap.

If they dont, its absolutely on Apple and not Currys. Why should currys take a loss?

Was it the same price in Currys as from Apple?

Then contact them. They choose who sells their products.
So surely Apple will sort out a swap for you?
