Ceiling light wiring

I’ve just took a light off to decorate and looked at the wiring.

There is a earth a red wire (what I thought was live) and a black wire. (What I thought was negative)

There is a wiring diagram the light. The earth is connected to terminal that has like a vertical line and three horizontal lines. The red is connect to the ‘N’ and replace black to the ‘L’.

I am thinking this is wired incorrectly? I’ve tried phoning a sparky to come and check it but they just don’t turn up. Assume because it’s such a small job.

There is no negative in alternating current (AC). Both phase (line) and neutral are live.

As long as the earth goes to the correct terminal if there are only two other conductors it does not really matter which way round they go. Three plus earth is a different matter.

Not necessarily true. Non-insulated Edison Screw lampholders must be wired with the correct polarity for safety reasons.

Ok. So sounds like it’s okay. The lights has been functioning without issue. As long as it’s not a definite disaster then I’ll get a electrician round to have a look. Thanks.
