Incorrect Default-Bank Confirmed-Do I Need to Do Anything re Default?

Hi, Thanks in Advance.

Background - lived in the UK for many years before heading back to Oz. Contacted all necessary financial institutions to ensure that all accounts were paid up and closed. Changed my UK address to my 'mother-in-laws'. Late 2017 was informed that received a letter from LINK financial regarding a outstanding debt. I read a thread here saying to ignore it, which I did.
Have returned to UK and followed up debt. LINK financial said that they'd been given the debt by The Co-operative Bank. I contacted the Co-op and they have stated and sent me an account statement to show that the account is closed with a balance of NIL and that I owed nothing. I informed LINK financial and they've requested for me to send them a copy of the statement showing the account is closed with NIL balance. Which I am doing.
I do believe this 'incorrect' debt/default has affected my credit score since I was knocked back on a phone account as they checked my credit score.
My questions are:
Once I send the proof to LINK that indeed the debt was incorrect, do I need to do anything else to have this debt removed from my credit file?
If I do need to go further to ensure this incorrect entry is removed, what would the best thing to do?
Cheers

  • No one sees or checks your credit score but you. Lenders don!!!8217;t see it nor asses your credit worthiness on it.

If Link have incorrectly added the default they will remove it from all of the CRA!!!8217;s.

Though one default won!!!8217;t prevent you getting a phone contract - something else is amiss here.

Likely that you!!!8217;re not on the electoral roll and have had no credit history in the uk for some time.

    Thanks Gary. Appreciate the info.
Re: If Link have incorrectly added the default they will remove it - they told me that the Co-Op sent them the debt. Does that mean Co-Op will have to remove or is it still LINK who will sort?
Re: electoral register - I was def on the roll in London and now will check where I am.
Re: Credit History - def should have that as kept 2 UK bank accounts with credit cards while I was away.
    Again thanks.

Are you sure the account had a zero balance or was it written off when it was sold to LINK?

On the statement it says 'Adjustment' next to the credit to bring the balance to NIL. So does that mean I missed this account when closing them and it was written off?

Does that affect any of the previously stated?

    Thanks in advance
  • Either written off or sold to a collection agency.

    What is the amount?

There must of been a balance outstanding, which was then sold to Link, it does not look like its been written off.

Link must of bought something, otherwise how have they got your details and an outstanding balance.

Its standard practice for the original creditor to mark the account as settled, once its been sold on.

What do Link say about this, and how much are they chasing you for ?

OK must of been sold on. Amount was £133.66.

LINK asked for a letter and the bank provided me with a statement showing:
    Adjustment - £133.66
    NIL
    Account Closed
