Hi everyone
I'm in need of some more advice regarding my neighbour issue...
We officially moved into our house about 2-3 months ago. We noticed when we first purchased the house (6 months ago) that there was regularly loud music playing next door and the occasional smell of what I can only assume was cannabis coming from the garden shed.
Before we moved in we went round and spoke to the neighbour about the loud music. They agreed the music was loud and apologised, they have since moved the source of the music to another room in the house so we couldn't hear it as clearly in our home. I decided to keep a diary of all the occasions we've heard the music since in case we needed to speak to them again.
I must add that when we went round to speak to the neighbours, the parents (who own the house) weren't in and it was the teenage son who answered the door. We think the message got through and we were hopeful that the 'kid' would be scared of us telling his parents when they got back from holiday. We had about two or three weeks of peace and quiet.
Recently the issues seem to be creeping back into our lives. We've noticed the source of the music has been moved but it is now blasted out the kitchen door to the rear of the property which can still clearly be heard from our's and neighbouring gardens. The smell of cannabis is also getting to be an issue. We have been working in the garden and can smell it as if it were being smoked in our own garden. On more than one occasion over the past week the smell has come in through the windows of our home and can be smelt throughout the house.
Neither my partner or I can stand the smell especially when neither of us smoke, but this and the music is effecting our enjoyment of our home. I've read online that many people have tried to involve the police with no joy. Could anyone suggest a solution or advise on how they might have tackled a similar issue? I'm going to be ringing the local council on Monday to see if they can advise but I don't feel happy broaching the situation with the neighbours directly. My partner has already had a weird encounter with the neighbour (him acting strangely... that's a whole other story!) so we are hoping someone can help.
We love our home and are in the process of making it our own but I fear if things don't get better our only solution may be to move.
Thanks all.

Not to mention that the whole issue of "passive smoking" takes on a whole new meaning with it being drugs, rather than cigarettes.
Wonder if there's any way you could come at this from a health angle? - ie to do with that enforced passive smoking.
Could your local community bobby pay them a visit maybe?0 -
Loud music is an Environmental Health issue, as for the cannabis although it's a crime you local police may not be interested in a bit of personal use in the home.0

Thanks both
I'm hoping the council will be able to help on Monday. I don't want to take it to the police yet as i'm hopeful it can be resolved without going down that route.
Lets see what happens....0 -
You've only spoken to the child?
My son would never tell me if the neighbours had complained, he's a teenager! We've told the neighbours many times to tell him directly, whenever they want to, if he makes too much noise when we're not home. And to let us know.
You need to speak to the parents before going down any official channel. And I'd also speak to the kid again directly. Kids are like that, they will push the boundaries. They probably think it's alright in a different space or that you're fine with the current music level.
Is it just the kid smoking cannabis? Or the parents too?Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

You should report cannabis use to the police."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Hope is not a strategy...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

True agree with others over here, that kid might be afraid of their parents and doing these things when his parents are away. As per your words you look exhausted, too solve this you must talk to his parents directly and discuss the whole issue with them if that doesn't help then approaching the local authority would be the best option to get your peace back.0

Hi,
Our previous neighbours were heavy cannabis users who used to invite their mates round to smoke it with them. The smell was terrible and I had to keep my windows and doors shut a lot of the time. Our local police were brilliant but it took two years before the landlord finally evicted them. Are your neighbours renting? If you have no luck with talking to the parents then you should get in touch with the landlord and complain.

if the smell is coming from the shed and no-one is in there, it may very well be a grow room, which could explain the neighbours weird behaviour. The police would most definitely be interested in an intent to supply vs a casual smoke at home.
Good luck and let us know how it goes. Looking to buy my first flat later this year and loud inconsiderate neighbours is my biggest fear at the moment.0
