Meanwhile one useful idea will be to check out the local Facebook pages - I expect Nottingham City Council has one and there's bound to be more "unofficial" ones. For instance - many places have an "I love x" Facebook page - so am guessing there will be an "I love Nottingham" one.

Get hold of a couple of copies of the local newspaper/s (that's something I wish I'd done for here - as some issues of the one here have been a "revelation" - eek!!!).

EDIT; Quick check revealed "Love Notts" and "I love Nottingham" Facebook pages.

Further quick check - the City Council one is "My Nottingham". Even the City Council Facebook tells you something - ie the general attitude. It's clear my own home city, for instance, is run like a business basically and allows for having a very diverse population and clearly expects us all to want "variety/variety and yet more variety".

I also advise reading the (Community Council/town council/city council) minutes of any community one is planning to move to (be it village, town or city). That soon gives the impression as to whether there are people running it like a narrow-minded clique, a business or whatever-else-is-the-prevailing-ethos.

I shouldnt have thought there'd be much difference between one English city and another English city - but worth checking in case. The whole ethos can change between one area and another and imo vary from "Oh do keep up - that was the fashion 6 months ago" to, on the other hand, "Now - about that event you've never heard of 100 years ago/x hundred years ago - we're organising a commemmoration of it"
