Worried I have been victim of Identity Theft, Please Help
Comments
-
I've done some searching and it appears that whilst that job advert has now stopped, another one has popped up, but this time in Leeds.
I think it is safe to assume/err on the side of caution that your details have been obtained for illicit purposes, as a company who intends to open 20+ sites nationally would have a far more formal process for recruitment and wouldn't do so via Gumtree either!
I would recommend;
- Reading the following; ico.org.uk/your-data-matters/identity-theft/ (from 'What can I do if I'm a victim of identity theft?' onwards)
- You have already contacted CIFAS, so depending on their advice, the logical next step would be to alert your local police force as to what has happened
- Contact the Royal Mail Customer Enquiry line on 08457 740 740. It is possible for a mail redirection to be fraudulently set up on your address. Alternatively contact them via this link: personal.help.royalmail.com/app/contact/session
- File a report here; actionfraud.police.uk/report-a-fraud-including-online-crime-questions
- Ensure you keep a record of all your actions, the various organisations/people related to all of this you have spoken to and when and to keep copies of all correspondence (letters you send and receive)
- Keep an eagle eye on your bank transactions and credit report0 -
@T-C-G, thanks for the reply. Do you think finance companies would be rattled if I just contacted the credit reference agencies (Noddle, Clearscore, Experian) to add password protection to my credit report? This is most I think I can do. And that's true they can still used my scanned passport for fraud so not sure if it is worth renewing.
@Feedback, good shout with contacting Royal Mail - did not think of that. They said they would send a letter to my address before redirecting any mail so should be safe.
Also got a reply from the fraudster via email that there is a delay in the job opening due to a fire (very believable), would it be worth it scaring him that I have reported it to police etc. and taken necessary precautions to make them less likely to attempt anything, or would it maybe provoke him0
