Most banks now are getting pretty finicky about doing anything with cash other than paying it into an account. (for example the recent posting I saw on these forums where Barclays refused to exchange £5 notes issued by an in bank ATM for £20 notes, because the person requesting wasn't a Barclays customer).
Part of this seems to be related to a general attitude of "If you're not our customer, and your transaction won't make us any money: Go away"0 -
I recently found some more old pound coins but when i went into my local santander, hsbc and post office today they said they do not take them.
Does any one know where I can still bank or exchange them?
Thanks
If you're having trouble paying them into your bank and happen to live in or around London you might want to consider Fourex machines. They take them, but with a rather unfavorable exchange rate (you get about 80% back).0 -
I tried all my local banks where i have an account but then then thankfully I found a natwest who were happy to exchange even though i don't have an account with them!
Thank you0 -
Tried 3 different old coins in a HSBC coin deposit machine recently which rejected them so I'd interested to hear about any recent experiences as the royal mint are misinformed - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-491117480

The machines won't take them - I think you need to find an old fashioned bank with a human teller who (if you;re lucky~) will just do a straight swap or (if they're a jobsworth) insist you deposit them into your account.0 -

I paid in cash in a cash counting machine in NatWest recently, having counted up and bagged my coin pot. The lady took me over to the machine and showed me how it worked. She said it even accepts old pound coins. It didn't like one of my £2 coins though which turned out to be fakeMake £2025 in 2025
