Change of Address and Car Insurance

I took out car insurance in June, when my previous policy expired, using the MSE links to the comparison sites etc and paid £523.

I moved house this weekend and, therefore, called the insurance company (One Call) to confirm change of address on the policy. They claim that my current policy won't change to my new address and the best available quote is from Aviva at over £2,000!

I then used the MSE comparison sites to quote a new policy, the cheapest of which is Hastings at £848 if i take the black box - I have been driving for 20 years and have no adverse motoring history.

I am shocked and amazed that by moving house (and only moving three streets down from my previous property) has added £300+ to my car insurance policy. This is CRAZY!! Maybe this is something you should check before moving house - ask your insurance company how the potential new address will affect your policy before moving.

To top it off, I wanted to purchase a new car insurance policy with LV but because my new address hasn't changed with my bank accounts yet, I can't pay because the billing address has to match the policy address.

Very frustrated and annoying.

!) Notifying your BAnk of your new address is surely not too onerous you can't do it now??

    2) You are annoyed with the insurers who don't "like" your new address.

But who is the one wanting to change the goalposts from what you were originally quoted for??

See if a local broker (not Swinton) can help - they may know the issue you have found with your post code and have found a sympathetic company

What postcode is it and have you gone from keeping the car overnight in a garage to street parking?

You can always cancel the policy and take out a new one.

That scenario usually reduces premiums rather than increase them

I've moved house many times. Changing my address at the bank these days takes about a minute, either online or on the phone.

    Sometimes.

You'd think it would put the policy up as someone can drive into it on the street, but it is mainly to do with theft- theft by stealing the keys is easier if the car is on the drive outside the owner's house, and a garage lets them work undisturbed.

I'm expecting a massive rise in my insurance next year, the mid-life crisis people in my street keep buying boy racer Fords and VWs that get stolen off their drives, and all the work vans parked on the pavement get broken into virtually every night. My postcode has gone from "low crime" to "gone in 60 seconds" in a few months
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

Who are One Call? That's an insurance company I never heard of.

These unknown bottom feeding insurance companies that no one has ever heard of always appear at the top of compare websites. Yet if you ever need to make a change to the policy they will bend you over.

When I get quotes I always take the offer from a known company, not the one at the top of the list.

  • Thank you for your comments.

The at-home parking has changed from street parking to driveway.

I cannot change my address online with my bank - its either in-branch or a form in the post.

The good news is that I tried a local broker who found me a policy with Zurich for £750, so cheaper than the MSE comparison sites and no black box.

When I rung One Call back to confirm I have found a cheaper plan elsewhere that they couldn't match, they closed my current policy and charged me £55.99 for the privilege. However, when I complained about this charge, since it was One Call who couldn't provide a reasonable alternative, they kindly refunded this charge so hurrah for One Call Complaints Department.

Moral of the story - I have learnt that I will check how an address will affect my car insurance before I move house!
