Electricians advice needed please.

Hi, having just bought a house that hasn't had any electrics updated since 1962, we've had an electrician round to see what needs doing.

Any chance an electrician could have a quick look over this load and see if the work equals the price of £1100.

Thanks for your time.

1. Upgrade Equipotential Bonding to water main
2. Move shower distribution circuit into new consumer unit
3. New consumer unit for house circuits
4. Tidy up cooker panel exposed cabling
5. Replace hall socket
6. Rewire bedroom socket
7. Install supplementary bonding to bathroom
8. Upgrade/ tidy garage electrics
9. Upgrade light switch points with no earth
10. Upgrade/ tidy roof light
11. New bathroom light
12. Refix shaver light
13. Repair/ replace lamp pendant flex
14. smoke alarms to hall and landing
15. re test and issue cetificate.

Not neen in sparking for a while but here goes

    1. means increase in size of earth bonding, probably from 2.5mm to 6 or 10mm

    2. Means consolidating two units into one

    3. presume the old one has rewireable fuses, means upgrading to circuit breakers, this may be expensive.

    4. Probably use trunking to hide cables.

    5. Why replace socket, is this broken? if so not much here.

    6. why does bedroom socket need rewiring, is cabling old.

    7. Extra earthing to central heating pipes, and cross bond hot, cold water and if metal, the bath

    8. assume wiring has been left hanging, probably a few clips or some large trunking

    9. light switch points no earth means either earth cable cut off or will need one installing

    10. Why?

    11. Why is it a bayonet cap fitting that is broken?

    12. rescrew to wall?

    13. simple to do cost of flex/cord

    14. battery or mains operated? if battery just cost at what £5 each?

    15. they will charge £60 for these.

The actual cost of a 12 way unit on ebay with MCB's is £35, a Hager 12 way with MCB's was quoted as £85. Time involved for fitting that would be a couple of hours at mots, and that includes consolidating the shower unit.

Looking at you price I would say you have been charged to much. As a private job I would have thought around £600 mark, stick £150 for Vat etc maybe £750 tops.

Will be interested to see what practising electricians say. as an example my daughter was quoted £2500 for a total rewire of a 4 bed house with 12 lights, approx 16 dual sockets, cooker circuit, shower circuit, central heating circuit and appropriate bonding. Yours is just under half that for far less work!!

    Hi,

Don't forget about the actual supply side. If you don't have an incoming supply you will need to arrange a project with the a distributor (doesn't need to be the local one anymore) which could add more. If it's not a simple job, it may cost you however if it's a standard installation it won't be that much but expect in the region of £400-800 on average. Remember to get a contractors completion certificate as well if you need a new supply or they will refuse to install the meter.
