Old MP3 player won’t charge

I have an ancient Creative Zen Vision M, MP3 player
The battery in doesn’t hold its charge very long, approx 1 hour after a full nights charge so I bought a new battery off eBay.
The new battery won’t charge at all though. When I connect the charging cable it says the battery is fully charged but as soon as I disconnected the battery warning light comes in and says it needs charging.
Any ideas how I might solve this?
Ordered a new battery from an alternate source to try and see if the battery’s defective but is there anything else I could try?
