No paperwork, no idea if I had PPI

I have always dismissed the media reports about reclaiming PPI because I have no idea if I had it, nor any paperwork. I could probably dreg up a list of financial associations that I banked with or had mortgages with. Is it worth just writing to each one asking for information about any accounts I may have had at each address I have lived at? If so, how long should I go back?

It's up to you. You'd have seen if on your statements if you'd had it, but if you think you might have missed it, you could do some letter writing one evening.
The further back you go, the less likely anyone will have records.
I would focus on those where you believe you may genuinely have had it - bearing in mind most people didn't.0
