Morning cat8986 and thank you all for the information on the thread everyone.

I actually read the thread yesterday, but didn't reply as smart isn't my area. We have a department that deal with just smart meters and I'm going to suggest speaking to them as well.

I've had a word with one of the smart guys about this and how to read a smart meter and he's said.

'If this secure electricity meter was installed by Eon, ours are the only ones where you must press 6 four times, every others suppliers secure meters use button 9 (don’t ask me why)

If you press 9 on OUR secure electricity meters, it shows a WAN reading (wide area network) which is basically just the signal but it does look like a reading.

It looks from the customers query that it is one of ours so it will definitely be 6 four times for the correct reading and its the first piece of information which comes up and ends KWH.'

I do still think you should give us a ring cat8986 when you're next to your meter and we can talk you through it, we can then make sure we've got all the readings correct for you.

Thank you Helena , how bonkers is that ? My bosses have not updated this vital info to M.D.S meter readers so far but that is typical of them anyway.
I take it that all Eon installed Secure meters and all the ex Eon meters from people who have switched away from Eon that the meters will stay button 6 for total kwh reading
And if Eon are getting thousands of billing problems every month then this is the reason why..Choosing to install the cheapest smart meter is not paying off in the long run by the time you have payed out thousands of £30 compensations for nasty billing shocks which cause heart attack s and bank charges !
The odd post on here which comes to the attention of Eon staff is just a drop in the ocean

Thanks House Martin, no worries.

I agree, it's a bit odd. Malc and I do a report every week and we send it to some quite senior managers around the business, we'll certainly be including this topic and thread in it. There must be some more information around it that I don't know about.

From my colleagues email, it does look like you still need to press the 6 button, but something I'll try and check.

Thanks again.

Thank you for taking the time to look into my query Helena. I'm relieved to get a definitive answer about what buttons to press and that I wasn't going crazy!

I spent a lot of time on the phone yesterday evening with EON to try and resolve which I now believe it is.

You couldn't make it up could you.

How many tens of thousands of these meters has Eon installed ?

Morning cat8986,

No worries at all, I'm glad you've been speaking to us as well and all appears to be resolved.

I'm still going to see if I can get a bit more information about this and will post an update, if I can.

Thank you

• Helena,

I believe the information now being provided to you by your "Smart Guys" is definitely at odds with what your own smart meter installers are giving to customers on installation and at odds with available YouTube videos and PDF files on how to read this meter available from other suppliers.

Although I've now left E.ON I recently had my meter read by a meter reader and pressing 9 is how he obtained the reading and the meter reading tallies with and is not out of sync with previous readings.

I know it's extra work for someone at E.ON but surely a simple PDF from E.ON showing how to read this specific meter for both standard and Economy 7 tariffs would resolve the problem and confusion now being created?

Hi youravinalarrrf,

I agree and it's something I've raised, as I say, it's not my area so I'm asking others.

• I have a Secure Liberty 100 meter fitted by Eon in April 2016 which by changing supplier is now dumb. Until reading this thread I have always used the 9 button to read the meters monthly and the readings seem quite normal for my usage. today I did as suggested here and tried pressing the 6 button 4times which gives you exactly the same number as pressing the 9 button once. Think eon are trying to confuse a lot of people...
• I'm still going to see if I can get a bit more information about this and will post an update, if I can.

Thank you

Helena/Malc,

It's time we had an official update from your not so "Smart Guys" on this don't you think? ;)

As I mentioned in my earlier post access to a simple PDF showing how to read this specific meter for both standard and Economy 7 tariffs would resolve the problem and confusion.
