PPI Claim Newbie struggling

Hi,
Please help a newbie ..
I recently registered on the Resolver tool and am new to this, I have avoided all the 'claim PPI companies for many years and thought it was time to bite the bullet and attempt to make a claim by myself.
Using Resolver I have sent numerous PPI checker requests to all the companies I know I had accounts with. I've supplied full details of name and address changes dating back to when I know I held the cards, Loans & mortgages. all pre 2007 because I paid everything off during that year all accounts were closed. I only held onto closing statements. So I have account numbers for most but I do not have proof of the PPI paid. I have attached scans of the relevant statements and letters to the emails sent by resolver.
I am starting to get responses back and these range from 'we no longer have your details because our files do not go back that far' to 'your account/card number no longer exists on our system.
Where do I stand ?
The mortgage companies, four of them, I'm absolutely 100% sure I took out PPI because I remember the advisor telling me I was too young and would never be accepted for a mortgage without it. BUT because the mortgages were paid off in full at the time the houses were sold and these were all post 2005 I have not held onto any paper work. There is a possibility that the solicitors I used at the time may still have records and hold paperwork. I could contact them but maybe charged, is it worth it ?
Where do I stand without the paperwork/proof ?

Unless you can prove you paid PPI, you stand nowhere.0

That is not unexpected as the accounts are no longer open and there is no reason for firms to hold onto your data. The FCA recommend 6 years from closure but that is only a guideline.
Where you stand is that you provide them details of the PPI you paid if they dont hold details. The mortgage companies, four of them, I'm absolutely 100% sure I took out PPI because I remember the advisor telling me I was too young and would never be accepted for a mortgage without it.
Was that with a lender or via a broker/adviser or estate agent? There is a possibility that the solicitors I used at the time may still have records and hold paperwork.
The solicitors are not supplied with your insurance details.Where do I stand without the paperwork/proof ?
