Fixed term let agreement- agency claiming extra days rent is due?

I have moved out of a house with fixed term tenancy from 02/01/2018 "up-to and including 01/07/18"
I paid rent on the 1st of each month.
Just got my deposit back with a day's rent taken off for 1st of July claiming I should've given notice a day earlier.
This seems wrong to me as it's a fixed term and includes that day anyway so no notice is required.
Can anyone advise please? Seems to me they are just trying it on.

Why did you agree to that deduction before letting the scheme release your deposit?
You don't need to give notice to end a fixed term tenancy it just ends when it ends. Go back to the letting agent and tell them you want your money back.0 -
As Pixie says your fixed term ends on the stipulated date and provided you hand the keys back on or before said date you do not need to give notice, however if you go one day over then it would become periodic and you are then bound by the notice period.

It's a company let so no dispute scheme.
I'm trying to clarify my case, as far as I'm concerned it's a 6 month tenancy not 6 months and an additional day tacked on.
Does the rent paid on 1st of the month cover that day or does it start from the 2nd?0 -

It's the date your tenancy starts that's important when it comes to the end date of the tenancy, not the date you paid your rent.
If you had a 6 month tenancy and have made 6 months worth of rental payments then you do not owe any further rent money.0 -
It's a six month tenancy so should only be six months' rent due.
Your rent payment on 2 January was for a full month, right?0 -
