Cleaning up very old tools

  • I have a nice stainless steel digging spade that has a few rust spots on the surface of the blade part. (I must have put it away without oiling).
I just want to clean them off, rather than anything too drastic like grinding.
There seem to be a number of suggestions on this thread - anyone had a similar issue with a similar tool?
What would be best to try first?
Coca cola, salt, vinegar, sharp sand in a bucket - or something else?

Bucket of reject sand from whatever job you never finished...

Tip some used oil in it.... any old muck will do.......

Leave said tool in for a day or a week, and give it a wriggle and a shove every time you pass!

Almost the first lesson we had at horticultural college - and woe betide anyone who didn't put their tools back in the buckets of oily sand after finishing work!
