Doors and windows - where to start?

Hi,
I need new front and back doors to my house, but haven't got a clue where to start.
Budget is tight, so realistically the cheapest option wins out.
Do we go with one of the big names - Safestyle etc? Do we find a local tradesperson? Is there an in-between or another option?

Avoid all the big names - Anglian, Everest, Safestyle. Also avoid the regional/local names that operate in the same manner. Pick a local, genuine, competent company without sales staff and without huge marketing campaigns.
Name your location and folks may be able to give some suggestions.0
