It took me about two years to get my son diagnosed with ASD. It took so long because my borough didn't actually have anyone to diagnose him initially. Once he was on the waiting list (once it was possible to have a waiting list) he was seen within 6 months.

If you have other concerns, make sure they are raised at the assessment. I am pretty sure my son has dyspraxia as well, but once they had diagnosed the ASD they refused to look at him again for Dyspraxia unless he'd done a couple of programmes that his school didn't run to help with movement. So his writing and movement challenges were completely ignored.

He's now due an EHCP assessment (but its taken another four years, much school anxiety and I had to request it myself, schools wouldn't).

It was just a straight diagnosis by a Paediatric consultant and a speech and language specialist, no other service was offered. I've found it very difficult to get him any help at all because none of the schools he's been to would help.

Don't give up fighting! It took me 14 years to find answers and get help for my daughter. A year ago she had no help, no assessments, absolutely nothing and I spent all those years fighting for answers. Schools telling me I was paranoid and that she was just "shy".
1 year after starting college, she's now had a diagnosis of a learning disability, ASD and a social anxiety disorder and a EHCP. She has 100% support at college, a taxi to transport her to and from college and a support worker for 8 hours per week outside of college.
