Bath tap diverter stuck.

Think I've got the right name - my starting position is one of general ignorance and cackhandedness.
Over the last couple of months the plunger thing to divert the water from the tap to the shower hose bit has become increasingly stiff and reluctant to move.
I suspect limescale as this is a hard water area. Is there a simplish way to try to get it unstuck, preferably without flooding the place?
Thanks.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I have looked at a number of these for customers. In reality, if the diverter is stuck, it is not normally a replacement part. It also indicates that the rest of the tap is likely to be scaled up.
Replacing the whole tap is the most realistic option.

Have you tried repeatedly moving it up and down with the taps closed to see if that eases any stiffness?

In addition, have you tried a squirt of WD40? The solvent may free up the scale.
