Not everyone can get Office though corporate agreements tho, for the average user, its a lot of money to pay out, in some cases, its probably more expensive than the hardware they bought in the first place.

Given a chance MS would wipe out the pirate market, but they go after the big fish first, as there is more chance of getting a result. Your average Joe isnt going to be able to cough up the kind of cash they can get from companies who are under licenced.

OpenOffice Scripting framework allows macros to be written in OpenOffice Basic, Java, JavaScript, BeanShell and python, I think it might support some others also.

I use open office's calc software as I dont really need the fully excel system.

However I am looking to import external data using the web query function and it doent offer this option is anyone aware of opens source software that does?
