We are about to purchase a new caravan. I paid a £500 deposit on a MasterCard credit card and planning on paying the balance (approx £20,000) from savings. Will this give me enough protection or would paying a small amount with hp finance give me better protection? I want to make sure I!!!8217;m protected if any problems arise and I need to get things fixed and the dealer or manufacturer are being awkward or go out of business. Would a small amount of £1,000 cover me for the full amount?

Your figures don't make sense unless it's a £2500 caravan?

Paying just £1 on a credit card gives you protection for 100% of your money whether £2k or £20k.

By paying just £500 on your credit card, you should have 'section 75' protection for the full amount of £20,500.

(Assuming there's nothing else about the transaction that prevents s75 cover.)

That makes the credit company jointly liable with the caravan supplier for breach of contract. (But it doesn't provide any extra rights or warranties.)

If you pay another 'part' by another credit provider (say another credit card), they become jointly liable for breach of contract as well.

So then, if the caravan supplier breached the contract, you'd have the choice of pursuing...

We did exactly the same, £500 deposit on CC, rest from our bank A/C by transfer. That was back when we paid extra for the CC bit but this does not apply now.
Never needed it as the dealer dealt with the small problem we had straight away. However with a previous caravan purchase some years ago we had big problems and the dealer was awful. In the end a solicitors letter got us a full refund.
So my advice is yes pay £500 by CC and choose your dealer carefully, most are fair but there are a few rogues out there.
By the way, our last van had ATC trailer control which I thoroughly recommend.

Why ask this question after paying the deposit? Would it not have been better to ask before risking the money?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
