I went and checked the MOT history and found it had gone backwards one year; I suspect it had a new instrument cluster.

Yes, to clarify, we are talking a 2010 Opel Zafira, here, in Italy. Everything would appear to be fine but I just want to make sure 100%, which is why I want to go this route i.e. some sort of gizmo to dig down.

At that age, buy on condition and evidence of how well its been maintained, not on what the numbers say on the dash.0 -
On an eight year old car, the mileage is immaterial. You should be looking at the car's general condition, tyres, etc.
