    Hi Ted

I wouldn't buy white bread if you paid me.

We get our bread at a local bakery where it's baked fresh every night. Either wholemeal or granary. A large loaf, which they slice for you at the counter, is £1.12. Cheap at the price.

Some of us just hate the taste of wholemeal bread. I usually buy seeded bread or granary at a pinch.

We all know what is good for us but you have to enjoy life as well and eating something you dislike is like taking medicine

I wouldn't eat it if I disliked it! The wholemeal bread from our local bakery tastes gorgeous.

You can retrain your palette so that things you thought you disliked you come to enjoy.

I couldn't imagine ever eating cooked apples without sugar but after a bit you get used to not adding sugar to fruit and after a while you don't notice the lack of sugar and then you eat some apples that have been sweetened and they taste revoltingly sweet. It just takes time and perseverance.

It was the same with Green tea . When I first bought it I couldn't imagine ever getting to like it but if you keep going you eventually realise how great it is and how much you look forward to the next cup.

It's terrible disappointment drinking ordinary tea now and coffee, I just can't believe I used to drink loads of it or that I really loved it. I'm sure you could learn to love wholemeal bread if like Margaret you found a local baker who makes delicious wholemeal bread and you kept eating ONLY wholemeal bread for a few months. When you then had some white bread you'd then wonder why on earth you thought you enjoyed it more.

We don't have white flour in the house and haven't for years now, everything that needs flour is made with wholemeal flour, that includes pancakes, Yorkshire puds, cakes biscuits pastry. I enjoy eating, not having white flour does not restrict my enjoyment of food in any way whatsoever.

  • Low vitamin B-12 status and risk of cognitive decline in older adults

Low vitamin B-12 status was associated with more rapid cognitive decline.
I expect readers will remember that one of the reasons why folate fortification/supplementation may not be a good thing is that it hides B12deficiency.
But it looks from this research that it would be worth people supplementing with B12 anyway as this may be the way to slow cognitive decline.

The form of B12 most readily available in the UK isn't well absorbed and if you want to be sure you actually buy an EFFECTIVE form you need Vitamin B12 - Methylcobalamin though euvitaminservice may be cheaper.
I haven't done a thorough price match search so someone may be able to beat these links if they've more time to research.

  • I eat Burgen bread ( soya and linseed) or wholemeal granary/seeded loaves from a local baker. I find now if I eat white bread it's like eating cotton wool! It feels a horrible texture when chewing and is totally tasteless.

So you get per serving of Burgen lin/soya breadFolate166µg (83% RDI*)

Wholemeal bread naturally contains 40 micrograms of folate per 100g, compared to 25 micrograms for white bread.

And for an even more interesting alternative view try quackwatchwatch. and Quackpotwatch

However unlike Sephen Barrett I don't pretend to have qualifications that I never completed.

I rely on PUBMED for published peer reviewed research and journals such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which I'm sure you follow each month as I do so if you find anything on Quackwatch that conflicts with anything I post, I will guarantee my evidence is more recent and more accurate and I challenge you to find otherwise.
