Printer messed up... help badly needed!

I have a HP Deskjet 1510 printer which over the last few years has proved simple and reliable. Unfortunately in the last few days I seem to have had a document stuck as number 1 in the printing queue - and refusing to print. Obviously, it prevents anything else from printing too.
I've clicked on delete and been presented with a 'deleting' announcement against the item - but it hasn't deleted (over 2 days). Resorting to 'cancel all documents' simply removed the other documents in the queue and not the one in question.
Now I seem to have really messed things up as I followed some online advice regarding this sort of thing and went through 'run', 'services.msc' and then something to do with 'spooling'.
Net result: I can't even call up any information to do with the current status of the printer. It's like the PC has forgotten it.
Can anyone help me to get back to square one, please?

Assuming you still have the drivers and/or install disc that came with the printer (or download them), you could go to control panel then printers (or depending on your OS) Start then printers and devices. If you can see it there, remove device then add device. If it's not there, just add device.0

Start, Run, services.msc, find Print Spooler Service, right click on it and select Start. Right Click again, select Properties and change the startup type to automatic. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
When I've had large documents which refused to print or to be forgotten, the easiest solution has been to turn off the power to the printer at the plug and disconnect it from the pc and leave it for a decent amount of time (several hours not minutes). That's usually been enough to get rid of it.0
