Ovo to Eon: smart meter issues

A load of baloney indeed,…I couldn’t agree more.
The Smart meter roll-out programme has been an utter farce since its inception;…the ‘programme’ has cost over £11 Billion so far (paid for by electricity users through higher bills ) and in March this year the National Audit Office launched an inquiry into the whole sorry shebang. I think the official verdict was “It’s a F*** up! “
Seldom has the phrase “ a camel is a horse designed by committee ” been more appropriate.
As of Feb this year only 80 Smets2 meters had been installed in the UK.
The only advantage of having ‘dumb’ Smets1 meters (as mine are now!) is that they are very dinky and they have lovely flashing LED lights,…so they’ve not been a complete waste of time and money. :T0 -
Hi Helena, are E.on starting to install SMETS2 meters by areas or a national roll out, I have now been told I can change, BUT will it be SMETS2 ?.There are more questions than answers :shhh: :silenced:WARNING ! May go silent for unfriendly repliesPlease excuse me Spell it MOST times:A UK Resident :A0

We were with OVO and had their smart meters fitted, but as we're Cheap Energy Club members and switch regularly, they've never worked with other suppliers.
Total waste of money (we're all paying for them in our tariffs), for the short life they had.
We're always being told to switch and at the same time being told to get smart meters.
Won't bother again, until the unified ones are available.
It is so cheap you could change it every year and it would nt make any difference to anyone`s tariff.
All meter exchanges have always been absorbed by the industry. All perfectly good Imperial gas meters, measuring in good old cubic feet have now been usurped by European metric meters. Exactly the same meter but measures in different units, changed for no reason at all, and all paid for ultimately by the end user in higher tariffs.
Every year suppliers take out expensive Magistrates warrants and bring in expensive locksmiths to exchange perfectly good credit meters because the occupiers have ended up with a debt so large it is not acceptable. Many of these large debts are written off . Smart meters would stop this waste, paid for by the end user in the end just like the smart meter roll out
I have never seen one complaint on here about this waste of money changing Imperial meters for Metric meters.
Makes no difference how the gas kwh s are converted from Imperial to Metric but the industry rip out usable meters for no reason well before they reach end of life
.If they truly wanted to save money for the end user then simply refurbishing an Imperial meter with new seals and reusing them would easily be the best option0 -
I am with OVO on a two year fix (ends late Sept 2019)
Have resisted getting a smart meter installed as will likely switch at the end of the term.
OVO are now offering me a £30 credit on my bill if I let them install one.
Unsure if I should hold out or take the bribe!0 -

If they assured me it was a SMETS2 I would take the £30.
Anything else I would run a mile.0 -

I would take it, even if its SMETS1.
You currently have a dumb meter. Worst case scenario, you leave Ovo next year and are back to a dumb meter, but you are £30 better off. If data sharing hasn't been sorted by then, you can probably get your meters changed again by the new supplier.
I'm also with Ovo on the two year fix. I'm sure they picked up a lot of new customers from BG on the deal we are on. If they have any sense, they will try to keep us with a competitive rate when the current one ends.0 -
Thanks for your replies Terry & Nick
I would be very surprised if it was the 2nd gen they were installing.
Think we will get one installed as we still have a year before possibly switching and £30 is better than nothing.
If we were near the end of the term it would be different.0
