We've just opened this account for our daughter (12). Interest rate is OK (just over 4%) - she will be able to access it online. She is getting a cashcard and when she is 13 will get a Solo card which is a debit card you can apparently use online and in some shops. Free gift too (electronic organiser/radio). Seems OK to us!

Co-op's Bonus Account isn't bad. 4 - 4.5% tiered interest, annual bonus if you maintain a £50 balance (£8 each year from 13, £2 up to 12 yrs) plus cash card plus internet access (SOs, BACS trfs etc) plus ethical stuff.

    Hi,

Thanks to everyone who replied to my mail - FYI, Barclays do an instant access savings account for 11-15 yr olds with either a cash card attached or a Visa Electron card which you can use for purchases and cash withdrawal (the Visa Electron card needs parental consent). You can't operate this account online - you have to be aged 16 yrs + for this.

Full-service debit cards (where you may have overdraft facilities etc. such as Connect Cards are not allowed until you're 18 yrs old.

    Regards,

    Karen DB
