Tipping removal guys

Quick question please:
3 removal men, 2 pleasant & friendly, one miserable
g*t! ::cool:
Moving over 100 miles. I do want to tip as it's the right thing to do, but how much, and would you give it as one sum to share between them, or individually?

What makes you think it!!!8217;s the right thing to do? They are paid for that time.

Tipping exists because in america the service industry taxes in an assumed level of tips and whilst technically they should get paid a minimum, reality is they don!!!8217;t and rely on tips to make up the numbers.

In England we pay people minimum wage by law. Tipping is optional but it!!!8217;s never required or the right thing to do unless specified in your terms, which I doubt.

They!!!8217;ll be claiming pay for the travel time I assure you, it will be an atttactive job similar to airport runs for taxis. If they!!!8217;re self employed they will have built into the quote.

Do you tip at McDonald!!!8217;s? The postman? Wetherspoons barman? Why do we tip some but not others?

Give the impression you're generous ... let them believe they'll get one ... then they'll do a good job .... then say "Bye" and shut the door.

    :)

I'd give any tip to the one "leader" of the gang, in eye/ear-shot of the others ... and let them fight it out. They'll have their usual method and pecking order of distribution ...

Whatever the regulations some people tip if they have had good service. Our removals men went the extra mile and both packed and unpacked very well, very quickly and were helpful over a number of issues (one of them connected the washing machine for us!).
Seemed normal to say an extras thank you so I did.
I don't tip in McDonalds or on the rare occasions I go into a Wetherspoon's and don't regard that as inconsistent.

    Wow, just wow.

    Dau enaid ond un taith.
  • I know, I know, but it just seems really mean not to. Not quite the same thing as a solicitor though, is it? It's hard physical work, a hot day and we appreciate what they're doing.
I don't use McDonalds, but I do tip in restaurants when I've had decent service.
There are several trades where tipping is traditional in this country, and this imo is one of them.

I did the same. a crate of 24 lagers seem better than £10-15 cash.

  • We've moved twice in the past 12 months.

The first group turned up an hour earlier than agreed and whinged about the weight of our display cabinet (even thought we gave the dimensions on the initial quote and stated it had a mirrored back so obviously it was going to be heavy), no tip for them.

The second pair were far better, arrived bang on time, generally friendlier and more helpful, took a few items not on the original quote without any arguments and did the whole job quicker than I expected, I gave them a tenner each.

I wouldnt tip them at all. Not unless they did something exceptional over and above the service I was already paying for and expecting.
