Editing Movies and need a latop...I think

Hi everyone,
looking for some help understanding really. Dear step daughter is enjoying filming things with her phone and then editing them using iMovie on her iPhone to add things in and cut and past things. add music over the top and what not. She's actually getting quite good and was happy with it. I recently let her borrow my digital camera which allows for video footage and then upload that footage from the SD card onto our laptop...which to be honest is quite old now. I tried finding some free software that would run on it so that she can edit movies but came up at a bit of a blank. Windows moviemaker is free on windows 10 but not on windows 8 which is what her laptop runs. The other applications we found seemed really complicated, for example we found a youtube one which edited movies (but also allowed seemless uploads to youtube which wasn't needed) but like I said it was difficult for her to find what to do given the ease of iMovie. I don't really want to get her a MacBook as they are extortionate and although she's interested in it now she might not be in 6 months time, kids being kids.
Is there a simple movie editing software available that she can use? if there isn't do I need to buy her a MacBook to get iMovie? or can I get her a new laptop and install windows movie maker? Am I missing something in terms of movie editing software? is there a recommended one that I can get her that will be a bit iMovie-ish that she would find straight forward to use, that I could potentially install on her old laptop? I'm really just looking for a bit of advice here on what to do. thanks in advance for any help.

You can upgrade her laptop to Windows 10 for free.
What is the brand and model number?
Perhaps better to purchase a cheap second hand PC and attach a big monitor to it, than to buy another laptop. But let's see what she has right now before making a decision.0 -

Thanks, I am at work now so I will find out tonight when I get in. Its an ASUS something or other but I am guessing that's not particularly helpful.
I will check out the other software you guys have mentioned too.
