Do I need to SORN?

Hi,

Just purchased a new car and have driveaway insurance for 3 days. Old car is being collected this weekend and scrapped. My insurance policy on the old car will be switched to the new vehicle once the driveaway insurance ends.

At that point, until my old car is collected, I won't be driving it at all and will leave it on the driveway. However have read that it needs to remain insured? Will I need to purchase temporary insurance or can I SORN it? If so, will I need to notify the scrap people that it is SORNed? Are they able to collect a SORN vehicle?

Sorry lots of questions, but any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you don't intend or need to insure it then you must SORN it. Whether the scrap dealer can take it depends on whether they have a vehicle to load it onto, or if they plan to drive it to the yard (for the in between position of towing I'm not sure whether a towed car can be SORNed).

Ok thanks - I'll find out how they will be collecting it. Presumably then if it's loaded on the back of a truck and taken away, that would be ok?

Once I have then notified the DVLA immediately that I no longer have the car, is my involvement with the car over? Thanks

Yes, but if you don't notify them online (I can't remember if you can report selling a car to a dismantler that way) keep an eye out for a confirmation letter by post within a month, and chase them up if nothing appears.

Surely that's down to the scrap dealer.

Presumably the scrappy will have trade plates. This must be an everyday situation for them.

Next dilemma is that the V5C still has my old address on. I know I haven!!!8217;t missed any fines etc as it is my parents house.

I changed my driving licence last year and my current address will be linked to my road tax payments. Will this cause a problem that the address is different (I have letters addressed to me at that address so can prove it very easily) as the car is being scrapped?

    Thanks

And providing the car gets collected ok, when I notify DVLA it!!!8217;s been sold, does anyone know if they ask for an address there? If so, which should I put?!

    Irrelevant. The dealer won't care.
