Gmail POP3 problem

I use Thunderbird on my W10 laptop and K9 Mail on my android phone. I've always used pop3 as I prefer it that way. Leave stuff on my phone that I want there and leave stuff on my laptop that I want there - simples! BUMP again (sorry!)

I have 'sort of' fixed this by putting recent: in front of my username and it now downloads all the messages to whichever device I need it to.
Job done ....... BUT
Now, as well as downloading all the required emails, it also feels the need to download the 'sent' messages, which is rather annoying

Can anyone suggest a way to stop this happening?
