That!!!8217;s good news OP. I think I would want the refund. If it only had one owner I don!!!8217;t really understand how the seller acquired it pre-damaged. Wasn!!!8217;t he the only owner?

You do have to be careful how you word things in private sales. Even throwaway terms like, !!!8220;Good runner!!!8221; can get you into trouble.

Thank you to everyone for their constructive comments.
The damage was identified as being quite extensive, the suspension strut had been forced through the inner wing, an alloy engine mount split in two, shut lines on the body panels out of true, adaptive cruise control components missing from behind the frontt bumper.

I'm sorry but how can you go look and drive a car and not notice this, or just completely ignore the warning light? Let me guess - the price was too good to be true and you were greedy.

For a strut to have been forced through an inner wing would make it undrivable or at least really weird handling. A broken engine mount would have been obvious too.

A one year old car already eyeing up its third owner. Hmm...

This is why people lease or go through drivethedeal. If you change cars every 3 years it'll probably work out financially nearly the same as buying a year old.

Hence the title of the thread ...

I've always bought my cars privately largely because they are cheaper, if they weren't cheaper then of course I'd go to a dealership and buy one with a warranty. This car was at the lower end of the Autotrader guide price for a private sale so not suspicious on that count.

Re warning light I asked the seller for a service pre-sale mainly to have a diagnostic check done and get a report on the light I also paid for a full HPI check which came up clean. My downfall was to allow myself to be pesuaded to forego said service, which the seller told me had been booked, and accept a reduction in price instead. I asked about the warning light again before parting with any money and compounded my inexcusable idiocy by accepting the sellers assertion that he hadn't "noticed it" as though he'd said "no."

As I'm given to understand Sold as Seen covers the seller up to the point where a customer might reasonably be expected to find any faults without partially dismantling the article. The resprayed panels appeared perfect in fit and colour (to me), it drove as one would expect such a car to drive and I believe few non-trades people would have detected anything amiss. The exact provenance of the car remains unclear, I was told it had been a demonstrator. Later I completed a V888 request for information on previous keepers but the DVLA haven't responded.
As for the next owner of the car goes I'm confident that this person won't sell it on without being open about the damage.

Surely all this damage would have been visible thru the wheel arch area / engine bay / lying on yer back to get a good look.???
