Moving house - when to order Broadband

Hi,

I've bought a new house with a completion date in August.

My current home is connected to Virgin but they don't serve my new place so I'll be giving notice to terminate (I'm not in contract).

I want to go with BT at the new house. The current occupier has a BT landline but no internet (she is about 80 and in her own words "too old for things like that").

I want the service to be available ASAP after I move in, but I don't want to do anything that could disrupt the current occupier's line (see above - she is also too old for mobile phones and she's not in the best of health which is why she's moving to sheltered housing).

I'll talk to BT but in your experience is it safe for me to order my broadband without risking accidental disconnection of this very kind old lady's telephone?

The lead time for BB tends to be about 2 weeks, but you can usually request the date of commencement. So I'd say about 3 weeks before completion date will be early enough.
  • You might also want to be sure that the move will definitely go ahead before ordering!

It might not be an issue in your case, but if the buyer of your house was not able to complete, such that you couldn!!!8217;t move either, you probably don!!!8217;t want to end up in a contract for a house you don!!!8217;t own...

Thanks - I'm moving out of rented and we've exchanged contracts on the house I'm buying. If we don't complete then I (and unfortunately, the kind old lady) will have bigger problems than an unwanted internet connection.

If the existing tenant has a BT contract there, can you take up an offer yourself? Surely when the new company tries to take over ownership of the line BT will see it's in someone else's name and refuse? In which case you may end up with BB but no line to put it down?

You can choose the activation date, just put it down as the day of entry or day after and the hub will be sitting there waiting for you to connect

When you take out a contract with BT you can choose the activation date and move this as many times as you want if you needed too. You can even cancel the contract at anytime before the activation date (plus you also get 14 days after it's activated) without penalty.
They will also send the router to your current address if you wanted then you just take it with your and plug it in on the activation date.
