This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning

Morning everyone
Unfortunately I’ve had a restless night and hardly slept at all. I think I have managed to sleep for about an hour in total.
Not a lot planned here today, certainly not housework in this heat. Not that I need an excuse to have a day off from it.
As it is the end of the month I have a few admin bits and pieces to do like normal and I want to look at my budget and see where I can cut expenditure a bit. I've suddenly found myself in a position whereby my income is going to half from this month so need to cut back drastically.
Other than that, may go for a walk later.
Have a good day everyone whatever you are doing.0 -
Morning folks and thanks HOLLY. Another one here with a restless night, thanks in part to the heat but also worries crowding in, as usual.
Nothing much planned for today other than a bit of garden pottering and weed pulling. Then collapsing under the umbrella with my book. I am going through books at a rate of knots this weather. I am still waiting for cooler weather before tackling any serious housework!
DD sent me a little video last night on WhatsApp of the girls enjoying themselves at the van with their friends. Just a small woodland site on a farm with no bar, games rooms etc but they love the freedom there and make their own fun. Oh I am missing escaping there through the week when it's quiet.
Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) where wanted/needed. Welcome back NANNYWINDOW, glad you had a nice break. Take care all xx"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
Good morning everyone, I've slept better as it was a bit cooler, the previous night was awful.
I don't have anything much planned for today, other than getting some washing on the line and making dinner. I shall finish Darth Vader later, he's got all his limbs now so I just need to embroider a sort of grille on the speaking bit that projects from his face, make a cloak and a helmet. Then I need to think about Yoda, I have the right colour green but it has tweedy flecks, not sure that Yoda was tweedy flecked. I'll have a hunt through my boxes, if I have to go out, it will be an expedition to a nearby town, a bit of a jaunt.
This is my last day of employment although I actually finished 3 weeks ago. The DWP don't seem massively keen on me having a state pension, they have failed to respond to 2 letters asking for it. I'd quite like it though, I've paid NI over many years. I am fortunate in that I took what's called flexible retirement so my main occupational pension is being paid. There is a smaller additional pension accrued over the past 3 years and naturally HR have managed to mislay the paperwork I completed for that, I'm so cross as it includes all my verified ID docs and I'll have to take them all in again and get the verifications redone. Also, I really don't like the idea if my documentation being lost in some post room.
Rant over.
I can hear OH coming down now he's very early for a Sunday but now that I don't need taking to the bus, he can have a bit of a lie in every day. His mobile woke us both up at 1.30, since he never uses it as a phone, more as an alarm clock, he never gives anyone the number so I imagine it must have been a wrong number. I found out that it has the loudest and clangiest ring tone known to man, I never hear mine at all. I must see if I can find something that I can hear.
Has anyone heard from Dumpling?
Hope everyone has a good day.I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back0 -
Morning
nannywindow Welcome home :j I missed youSounds like you are well on the nut brown chart now i'm still lagging behind on cafe au lait due to a break in service with heat headaches.
Bit restless as well last night there was no air again so kept waking up and spraying magicool. Apparently in hot climates its common to go to bed on wet sheets and let them evaporate during the night thats sounding good now
Had some nice news yesterday...when I was 15ish I went on a school exchange programme to Toronto Canada and met my ever since pen pal. We had lost touch over the years as the art of penmanship disappeared but found each other again on Facebook a few years ago. Her daughter is a very talented ballerina and is studying in Russia so my friend is going to stay with her for a month and wants to take a week in the UK in October. I need to get my thinking hat on now about all we can do for days out. Blackpool will definitely feature as we spent a few days there on her first visit and she loved it. Doubt it will be quite as energetic as then though.
So today its a girls Sunday lunch in one of our posher restaurants/wine bars in town. Should be fun and a nice change from the dull as dishwater local carvery pub we normally go to. We are taking cabs so it could get messy but in this heat I think water is a preferred option
So not much else today bar getting me ready. Have a lovely day all :A0 -
Morning everyone
hollyharvey - thanks for starting us off x
Hugs to those that want/need one x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
DH and myself up enjoying peaceful cuppas, both boys still in their pits. I slept well last night but the night before I didn't so now feel like I've caught up with the sleep I missed.
Dinner last night was spatchcock chicken, HM egg fried rice and pasta in a mushroom sauce - bit of a mixture but DH doesn't like dry food so need a sauce/gravy with most meals - get's a bit wearing after a while though trying to think of things to do. I've made a bit of a planning area as I couldn't get a nice joint of anything for today so we've got chicken again, but it'll be with HG new potatoes, cauli/broc cheese, carrots, green beans, peas, yorkshires, and gravy. If anyone moans I won't be cooking a roast in this heat again - I've cooked one every week so far and it's a hot job.
Yesterday we visited both sets of parents in the afternoon, DH's parents gave us some red gooseberries, I'll be prepping them today and getting them in the freezer and a jar of gooseberry jam FIL had made.
Today we'll just be chilling, and getting ready for holiday and the week ahead. I did get our bed stripped and all bed linen washed, even the mattress protector - it's quite thick so needs a good hot breezy day to get properly dry, although it's hot here at the moment it's breezy too, so ideal.
Keep safe and well x

It seems to have got even hotter here, last night there was barely any breeze to make the night bearable.
Sis-i-l and friend are arriving this afternoon, they have tickets for Centre Court tomorrow but I don't think I envy them in this heat. The trains from here are up the creek since the new timetable changes, some mornings they are virtually all cancelled so we'll have to find the best way for them to travel. I'm so glad that DH no longer commutes, the problem is that they have made the trains on our line travel through London via St Pancras to Brighton but they haven't got enough trains drivers to go through London. It's been a nightmare for DDil, she has a 40 minute drive to the station and sometimes gets there to find no trains. The other morning she arrived to be told there would be a replacement bus to take her to Peterborough (25 miles north) to get a train at 9.40 (she is due in at work at 9.30). Understandably her boss (who is horrible anyway) is getting very annoyed.
Sorry, rant about the trains, they've not been as bad as this since the Potter's Bar crash when they were terrible for about a year.
Just cleaning to do today.0 -
Morning all - another glorious one too.
There could be some relief for some areas, a yellow weather warning for some parts of south east England and Wales https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-44672292
I found myself with most of my body outside of the duvet this morning. The windows in the hall and bedroom were open, top and bottom, so some breeze got through at least. Ex-OH is still sound asleep in the spare room and I want the sheets off to wash.
Yesterday I realised that I'd left behind in Glasgow my haversack, so no iPads, book, clean / used underwear - nothing! :rotfl: Just as well I'm going back tomorrow. And cos DM is not too well she hasn't noticed, double :rotfl: She normally goes through every room in her apartment checking in case I've left anything behind. I may get off with it though it shows just how stressed I am.
Today I intend to sit in the back garden for a while and read. Last night we sat on the new bench in the front garden and chatted. Very nice it was too.
Nelski - how lovely to meet up with your penpal again after a long time.
Snoozer - fingers crossed for a good arrival without problems.
TA - isn't technology wonderful! It's opened up so much more pleasure for us oldies. I hope you can look back at your caravan days with happy memories, and you've passed all that onto to the grandchildren.
AOD - have you tried phoning DWP? They do seem better on the phone.
I'm off to have my first cup of tea in peace and quiet! Happy Sunday to all.0 -
Morning ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one.
I was going to go to the fabric warehouse this morning, but have a funny tummy again, not sure if its from too much fruit, will give it a couple of days before tearing off to the Drs.
It was cooler here last night, once the sun goes off the front its not so bad, keep the curtains closed though, open the windows once the sun has moved over the roof.
We have been concerned for a while about the amount of cold water we have to draw off before the hot comes through, I have a jug in the kitchen, using it for the cold water and then storing it in a watering can to water the garden. The washing up water is also getting chucked on the garden as long as its not too greasy.
Its sheet day tomorrow so have what was in the linen basket in the washer, its almost a full load. I will have towels on Tuesday as well. My washer takes in the amount of water needed for the wash, so fairly economical.
OH is in the garden will be calling him in shortly for tea, we will have it in the garden I think.
Chicken for supper tonight, not sure about a dessert though.0 -
Good morning everyone :hello:
We have rain! Just a little bit but it feels a bit cooler and more bearable. I woke at 3am so ridiculously hot so I came downstairs and Lee followed me down a few minutes later. He is spark out on the sofa snoring away now and I managed to grab 40 winks as well so I feel a bit better.
Well things are just chugging along here, we are all adapting to Lee being Lee except for Steve who is struggling a lot. I am hopeful it will all come good though given a bit of time. Lee's psychiatrist is going to refer him to the Gender Identity service so I have yet more websites to look at. Lee seems a lot more happy though so I can't be sad about that.
Phoebe has officially left school now and is having a little break before looking for a full time job. She is still working part time at a cafe and she has changed so much in the last couple of months. She seems a lot more confident and it is lovely to see her blossom.
Lilly is teaching herself to surf with her best friend this Summer. They are going to the beach most days and she is looking very fit and healthy where she has been in the sun. Her friend is sleeping over at the moment so I will expect to see them around lunchtime.
Jemima, her husband and the grandchildren are away on holiday this week. We will miss them loads but hopefully they will have a lovely time and come back relaxed and refreshed. The girls have been tasked with the job of keeping their pets alive until they come back.
As for me, I haven't been too well to be honest but my lovely cmht lady is back on the scene for a few more weeks and is keeping a close eye on me. Steve is doing his best to support me as well and I feel very looked after. It still feels like I am juggling everything in the family and at times it is very overwhelming but I have a lovely family and good friends so I am sure I will be ok.
Welcome home nannywindow, your lovely posts have been missed, glad you had a good time away xx
snoozer, the trains sound terrible, I hope the situation improves soon x
nmlc, I can't believe you are cooking roasts in this heatwave, I hope they are appreciated x
AOD, thank you for thinking about me, I hope your pension gets sorted out quickly, it's so worrying when they lose your important paperwork x
Steve is on cooking duty today so we are having wraps with salad and chicken goujons, should be delicious. I also need to hoover through as it is looking a bit hairy mcclarey everywhere thanks to the dogs and the girls. Other than that it is going to be a nice relaxing day I think. Take care all xx
