Rights to a repair for a tumble dryer

I've recently moved out and now rent my own property. Someone gave me a Hotpoint tumble dryer and I've checked and it's one of those ones on the recall list. As I did not purchase it and was gifted it, am I still entitled to a repair (assuming they are still repairing them). It was left in the garage for a while and I really can't afford to buy one at the moment.

According to Which,
"Proof of purchase
When there is a product recall, you will usually be asked to provide proof of purchase.
If you weren't the purchaser (for example, you received the faulty product as a gift), the easiest route to getting your money back will be to get proof of purchase from the person who bought your gift, if this is possible. This is to make it easier for the retailer to process your claim from an administrative perspective.
If you're not able to get proof of purchase and the person who paid by cash, you should go directly to the manufacturer.
The manufacturer should not require any proof of purchase. If you have the item your possession, that should be enough, and the manufacturer should arrange to retrieve, replace or fix the product."

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Thanks for the reply, I had a horrible feeling that my rights would be none as I was not the original purchaser. I may be able to get the papers, it was from someone at a walking group who I usually see weekly but I will try Hotpoint on Monday first.0

Do check the back of the machine for the green sticker that confirms the machine has had the issue fixed. The sticker may also be just inside the door. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

Be careful even if it has been modified. The BBC's Watchdog programme showed that the modification doesn't completely prevent fires although it does reduce the chance. Even the replacement dryers they were offering at a discount aren't completely safe.

My tumble dryer was old and I bought the cheap replacement. No proof of purchase was ever asked for, just the serial number to confirm it was one of the qualifying machines.0

I had mine replaced ... They never asked me for proof of purchase. It was my mum's before she gave it to me and I never had to look for any paperwork .. All done by model number, not even asked for serial number. But yours may have had the mod already so they might be able to check this on the helpline.0
